After the war he studied law at Cambridge University, graduating with a first class honours degree in 1948. After working for a year in the Foreign Office, he became a journalist with many papers including The Times, The Observer and the Daily Telegraph. His first novel 'The Whirlwind' came out in 1969 and was followed by eight other novels including 'The Tree of Man', 'The Longest Journey' and 'The Aftermath'.

He has also written several plays for television and radio.
